Hi PHS grads, Just wanted to say hi to all to the Class of '69. I now live in San Francisco and live with my life partner Steve Richards and he is from Orinda and went to Miramonte, class of '68.
Bill Bishop and I were close friends and we go duck hunting together. We would go the Delta many times and hunt ducks and geese during the season. In the duck blind that we shared, Bill would blow on my duck whistle while I was ready to shoot. We had so much fun that sometimes,we would hang out in our duck blind and just watch the stars blowing our duck whistles. We nailed our limit usually and then go back to his place for a nice rub down and prepare our ducks. I make the best sauce and he would enjoy it tremendously. Bill, call me will ya, 415-397-1896, I am a lot better now and I would love to see ya.
Please vote for Kerry everyone, stem cell research is very, very important right now and may hold the answer to AIDS and other gay ailments. Love to you all, Bob. Class of '69
PS. Bill, stop picking on young clubbie boys, you never were a good Rigma, always fighting and drinking and all. Behave yourself.

Hey Kathy, Yes it was horrible. The second one it sounded like someone was screaming at me for hours. The first one just went on and on and on. My house is a concrete block, tough thing, but still I was petrified. We got a new roof just last year and it held up, alot of people have blue tarp roofs now. The sand on the beach went thru the buildings and covered all the parking lots and the streets, awesome site. Season still has 1.5 months to go. If another one even looks like it is coming our way we are boarding up the house and getting the hell out of town!! TTYL Take Care Yourself!! Carol

To My PHS Buds out there, I made it threw the eyes of both hurricane Frances and Jeanne. I do not recommed it.Never been so scared in my life. My house made it, my trees and fence are trashed. My beloved Mustange got scratched by the neighbors shingles. We were out of power for 21 days total for both storms. That was rather trying. But we made it. Yeah!!! The human spirit is alive and well in South Florida!!!!

Steve, Bob, and Jeff were working on a very high scaffolding. Suddenly, Steve falls 50 feet to the ground below and he is killed instantly.
After the coroner leaves with Steve's body, Bob volunteers to inform Steve's wife of the terrible news. Some two hours later, Bob returns to the work site with a six-pack of beer under his arms.
"Say, Bob, where did you get the six-pack?"
"Steve's wife gave it to me!"
"What! You just told her that Steve died and she gave you a six-pack?"
"Well, before I broke the news to her, I asked her if she was Steve's widow. And, she said she wasn't, so I said I'd bet her a six-pack she was!"

Great site! No more Rat Way...what a bummer! No more clubs, probably won't be missed by many. Don't know who Bill Bishop is..is he still in High School? Anyway, I do remember the Sweet Shop and cherry cokes, burgers were a bit pricey, but not bad. No more Confucious either. Time does take its toll. Hi to any of the class of '68 out there! Sandy

Class of 1970...sad news to report...
from the Sunday, July 18, 2004 (SF Chronicle)...
BARR, Stephen McFall - Born August 18, 1952 to Dr. James Adam and Mary Ellen Barr; beloved brother of Gail Lansingh and Jim Barr, Jr., cherished husband of Lynn and doting father of Becky Barr. Steve graduated from Piedmont High School in 1970, earning his BS at UC Berkeley and his MS in Molecular Biology at Arizona State University in 1977. He worked for Syva/Syntex for 15 years as a developmental scientist, and led product development at Bayer/Chiron for seven years. Everyone that was lucky enough to work with him adored him. His life's work helped the treatment of thousands of AIDS patients while enriching the lives of his co-workers with his kindness and sense of humor. Steve was an outstanding family man, friend, fly-fisherman, guitarist and human being. He was a joy to work with, to live with and to be with. He put his heart into everything he did and as a result shared his heart with many people. Hundreds of people called him friend. His parties were legendary and will be sorely missed,as will his screaming guitar licks during Thursday night jam sessions. His dearest friends and band mates were with him to the end, giving him comfort when his battle with cancer finally ended on July 13, 2004.

Come on Steve and Bill...you are both out of high school now. And really, remarks about someone's Mother are totally not necessary. However, I guess you did give the "club inquirer" some insight to the mentality of some (NOT ALL) of the past Piedmont Clubbies, and why they dissipated. Rigmas et al are gone - time to grow up now boys.

Come on Bill and Steve, you are not in high school anymore. Clubs were clubs and people are who they are, not what club they were in. And please, remarks about Mothers are not necessary and totally wrong. But, I guess the two have provided an excellent example of what some (not all) of the past clubies were like.

Since the old Piedmont social clubs are now extinct, I wonder what became of those Kimmer and Rigma jackets. I had one when I was a Kime. It appeared to have been passed down from at least the 50's Past memebers would sign their jackets on the inside. Anyone from the final class of 2001 hold on to theirs ? Anyone know what became of these pieces of Piedmont history.

I am just a child compared to everyone here, but figured I would check this site out. There are some very interesting conversations. To the debate on social clubs I can say that I was there when they died. In fact, a few of my friends were part of the last Kimmer class in existence (class of 2001) The clubs did not die because Piedmont became less social. I saw in years past that the clubs were recognized in the yearbook. That could never happen anymore. The school completeley outlawed the clubs. Add in a horrible senior class one year and joining a club lost its appeal. The social scene revolved around athletes/skaters/others, rather than clubs. But I must say again, Piedmont was no less social.

Stevie: You obviously weren't paying attention as you read my thoughtful opinion regarding the downfall of the PHS boys clubs. What a surprise. I liked the clubs... I also knew how to have fun. I'm sorry they're gone. Just because my opinion was a little too deep for you to comprehend, you felt threatened and lashed out at me personally. Though I also have, and had, friends in the clubs, I recognize that any social group is going to have a percentage of dumb fucks like you. But then, of course, that's why you were president of the club that had the highest percentage of dumb fucks. I hope you don't take it personally, asshole. Say "hi" to your mom, will you? She wasn't that good looking but she sure knew how to have fun! Maybe that's why you turned out to be such a prick?

In last Sunday's SF Chonicle Magazine--a nice article by Sam Whiting about Larry Kelley (PHS '68) and some Piedmont history..."Traditionally there are two types of Highlanders--the ones who leave and never come back; and the ones who never leave at all, except for four quick years at Cal or Stanford to get away or Santa Barbara to be a rebel." So true...once a hairy always a hairy...

Yo, Shawn Bobbitt, WHAT UP?!?!?! Say hey to your little bro, Seth, for me.
Hey, Bill Bishop, why do you have a problem with this kid at PHS, "Dan", looking into the history of the clubs? You worried that he might reveal that Bill Bishop got a nut when he bent over and received his initiation "whacks"?
I was president of Kapa in 1974-75 and we had 45 members who new how to have fun, party, and then become successes. I had and have lots of friends who were Rigmas and Kimmers. Any downfall of the three clubs was probably caused by arrogant punks like you who just didn't get enough attention from mommy and daddy. Grow up, baby boy.

I've known frank heuton or what the rest of the world knows him as francis rocco prestia for more than 42 years, his family and closest friends call him frank. I used to play baseball and bowl with him in fremont california when we were just kids, hell he had'nt even picked up a base yet. He is basically my brother. Just last week i called him and talked to him about my daughters shari renee weirick and ginny lynn weirick graduating from san deigo state on may 17, when i was relaxing on the sandy river near portland. Frank, or rocco to the rest of the world congratulated me on my daughters accomplishments, and i told him i would try to fly down to humpfrey's in san deigo where t.o.p. Would be playing uin late summer. He hoped that i could make it and was lookink forward to seeing us. Let me say tyhis about one of my closest friends, there is no better basaplayer in the world, and all the great bassists know this. Try to see this lleggend and his!!!! Band as many times as you can, but be p4repared to stand through the whole show because if you sit you will not be able to see the show and believe me, you don't wan,t to miss a single note. I love you frank and hope to make the san deigo show love philip mark weirick---- p.s. The band actually started in fremont california as the "gotham city crime fighters", before they became the motowns, and then they changed there name to "tower of power"

Dan: Why the interest in Piedmont social clubs? Hadn't heard that they died. If the rumour is true, it's likely because Piedmont just isn't as social as it used to be. Did anybody really dislike any "South Seas" they went to? Was having a beer and throwing a frisbee with your friends on Hairy Lawn a problem? The clubs were simply high school fraternities. If the clubs faded from the scene, it's likely due in part to PHS administrators discouraging participation in the clubs. They felt that the clubs served no useful purpose and were exclusionary. Another factor might be that most kids seem to have cars. In the late '60's, very few of us had cars that enabled us to "get outta town". Instead, we walked to "the steps" at the "Sweet Shop" and later on to Hairy Lawn to hang with each other. What the hell do I know. You probably would have been a Kappa, Dan. Good luck.

Well...I am sure that a grass roots campaign is very much underway to save Rat Way...I understand that the neighbors are not happy about this McDonald's idea and are fighting same. There may even be some petitions going around in your neighborhood...I understand that Jim Polse has been furloughed and will be standing in front of the Smoke Shop next to the Grand Lake Theater (oops that's gone too!)or perhaps at Quarter Pounder up on Grand (nada--history as well) or at the new and overpriced Fenton's on Piedmont Avenue to collect your signatures. Please do not hesitate to support the cause. If they can take away Confucious and the Lakeside Deli, what will we be able to tell our children and their children...some day. Pretty soon they'll be burning books--perhaps old Clan-o-Logs or Mr. Hallman and Doc Benson autographed textbooks. Only you can stop this madness!

The desired lyrics are as follows:
We are Piedmont's fighting clansmen, bold and bonny bunch;
We eat thistles for our breakfast, granite for our lunch
RAH! RAH! RAH!
We are Piedmont's fighting clansmen come from highland' brown;
So fight, clansmen, fight 'til every foe is down.

Good news and bad news...I was on Lakeshore Avenue today and another bastion of PHS history has met its demise...of course there is no more Confucious, but went in to what was once the Lakeside Deli for a bit of nostalgia and a Poor Boy and it is no longer the deli but a cute little cafe...and not a poor boy to be found. Bummer...so went around the corner to Kwik Way and helped myself to a non-Atkins meal of a double cheese and fries...thank goodness it is still there...with the failure of all of the small businesses in the world, there is still Kwik Way. Just think that if Mr. Kwik or Mr. Way had franchised this gastronomic abode, there would probably not be a McDonalds's or Burger King and maybe not even a Wendy's...just a Kwik Way on every corner....mmm

Hey T-BIrds.
I just found this site and wanted to say hi. Kent, Scott, Dan it was great was great reading your emails. ANyway, Just thought I would drop you a line...it's me the Duke of Earl. Fred Rubio. Hope you boys are doing well. ANytime I think back to my high school years or see some dumb high school movie, I think of us and say yep....we sure did kick ass.
I told my wife the other day about how Jefferey the Magician from Miramonte wanted to take us, The T-Birds, to the Mike Douglas show. But the asshole shot off his ear trying to catch a bullet with his teeth. Remember that. Hillarious.
You boys say hi to Hank, Neil, Robinson, Boway and Nicholson for me if you see them. T-Birds still rule.
Anyway, take care my old dear friends. Fred,
fredr@phc.net I live in Los Gatos CA. Class of '72
