My brother (Denis, class of '80) told me of this web site. Pretty neat. Neither Denis or I (class of '81) know the origin of the term "Hairy" or that we were in fact Hairys. What or where is Hairy Lawn? Will someone please e-mail and educate me?

Hello Pam Parker and all. This site is getting way too strange. I'm virtually certain that there is no band called Dick Dangle and the Dingleberries. I'm also virtually certain that there was no one in a "Miller" jersey chasing someone down the sidelines and into the endzone. We didn't score many touchdowns, but we didn't give up many either. Where is Matt Lempres or Mike Bartlett to confirm this? And yes, Pam, you are embarrassing me here. Go to some of the links to find out about the Hairy Lawn.

Class of '83 ... where are you?
David Langdon seems to be our HairyNet poster boy! Go, David. I hope you quit that nasty Copanhagen. But where are the Morgan Brothers, Daryl E., John Sheehan (the wall gang), Rodgers and everyone else from Beach Elementary, Charlie and Treece and their 'zine, and the J.O. girls circa '80, '81, '82, McCreary and Terrell?
In answer to my Uncle Doug Miller's (PHS '74) question about drinking at PHS, I would say the answer is a resounding "YES" as far as the Class of '83 is concerned and from what I've heard about the Class of '00 that hasn't changed much. Thanks for telling me about the HairyNet! Would it be too stupid to ask what the orgin of the "Hairies" is? Hope I'm not embarrassing you here.
Speaking of embarrassing, I have a distinct memory of a "Miller" jersey chasing a spry reciever all the way down the side line and into the endzone. That's all I remember about the Class of '74. Sorry.

I saw Lamanda Johnson's comments about Piedmont High playing Fort Bragg. Piedmont sports teams have been going to Fort Bragg for several years. The connection is that Charles "Cobby" Berger Piedmont class of '62 is a long time teacher and coach at Fort Bragg High.

Lefty: I understand that Piedmont High is 7-1 on the season with two more league games to go. They are 3-0 in their league. I have officiated several games this year (including Piedmont's only loss against a good Las Lomas team) This past weekend I had San Leandro/Arroyo and Castlemont/Skyline. It is my 19th year of officiating high school football and I guess I am still trying to make up for the fact that in four years at PHS, I probably saw less playing time than I do now in 1/2 of football. The reunion was good and the idea of spreading it out a couple of years ('69 and '70 and '71) may make sense in a few. We all have friends we'd like to see from those classes. Sorry to hear about the younger DuFloth being crushed up there in Chico but still everyone remembers those freshmen years (we were 1-5 including Mac's backward punt!) See ya! CB

Cindee,
If you are interested there is a real haunted house you can visit down the street from me. Everyone in Medford knows about the "old man", but only a few have actually seen him, myself included. If you get to our area in late October, I can arrange accommodations at this location, and should you get up somewhere around 3:45, you can see him walk the pathway past the kitchen window. On some nights, he actually stops and looks in the window. You then get the thrill of running outside to see him and guess what? He's not there. This is all true stuff. I have seen him and so have both of my sons. Good luck on your Piedmont search. I know of one house that used to be haunted on Craig Ave., right off Highland. I can't remember the address. A few friends and I heard that spirit, but we never did see it.

Special Thanks to Katie, Jane, Dean, Sherry, and all those who showed up at the '70 party. It was real special. I think Jim Forman put it best when he said the event, "Moved him deeply". Let's party again soon. The idea of including the other classes is great because I don't think there is anyone in'69 or'71 that has it together enough to organize it themselves.

Cherrie Jenkins-Bohan, The Harv was a member of the Lamplighters for years...I think he was musical director; I believe the Lamplighters did (does?) musical theater in the Bay Area... He is currently Dean of the Music Dept. at Foothill College...students there must take a course in avoiding flying chairs before enrolling in any music classes...by the way, are you still playing the harp, John Faddis style?...growing up in piedmont, home of the blues, you must be really good by now! there's nothing quite like blues-harp, piedmont syle!
Speaking of Deans....hey Dean Miller....yes! That's a great idea...I've always thought the reunions would be a lot more fun if they included folks from other classes...just one thing Dean, if we get together with your class, I owe you at least one Charlie Horse in each leg...lefty

Well, sports fans, the class of 1970's 30 year reunion is in the books and for those who were unable to attend, you missed a good get together on both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon! I first want to apologize to Jane Witter for showing up at the reunion in 1970 attire...blue jeans that were ready for a flood, a white button down,short-sleeved shirt, black loafers and white socks and a JC Penney white undershirt. I am disappointed that she'd think that I was crass (I learned that word from Rob Schweitzer prior to the SATs in 1969) enough to not also pack a coat, slacks (with cuffs), and tie in the car to put on a couple of minutes later. I mean, I belong to a country club, too but I don't get too nervous when my 8 year old forgets to wear a collared shirt on the putting green. And I am also sorry that I wore my #97 PHS football jersey, but shucks, I got more use out of it on Saturday night than I did in 4 years at PHS on Friday nights. Ahhhhh, now that I have that off my chest, hats off to Jane and Dean and Katie and Sherri (and I am sure I'll forget others) for spearheading the effort and putting in a lot of hours to ensure its success. The yearbook is great and for those who attended either day, I believe they had a lot of fun. As I looked around the place it was good to see that for the most part, we all look pretty darn good for 47/48 years of age. Only a couple of people had a few stray gray hairs or receding hairlines (hats off also to Great Day and Rogaine!) and all of us were still relatively close to our playing weights in 1969/1970. In fact, after reviewing some our sizes from those football programs I brought along, I am sure glad that each of us was listed a couple of inches taller and about 25 pounds heavier than reality. Now we can tell our kids that we all really did weigh 195 in high school when we were really 175. Well, maybe not me. I'd have to get on the scale with Jiro Maru to reach 195 even today. Finally for those who did not attend, we told more stories about you than we did about ourselves so next time (in 2005) you need to show up, if nothing else just to defend yourself from the innuendo! And now a challenge for all of the class of '70--Brother Michael DuFloth has given us this wonderful place to share and swap stories--don't be bashful and keep the reports coming on any hairy sightings around the world. You never know when Polse may reappear!

Just a short note for the PHS class of '70 who are in the area or in the area just to attend the 30 year reunion this Saturday, September 2...check out that new Piedmont High School football field. The renovations have been complete for a couple of years but this year they have put in a new "artificial turf" that is supposed to be state of the art. Not like the infamous astroturf but a much more natural kinda thing. As I have been assigned to officiate Piedmont's football scrimmage against Northgate this Friday night and their opener against Las Lomas on Friday, September 8, I'll get to check it out up close and in person. We'll have to see how these old legs hold up on that new field.

Whoa! As the 2000 cross-country season rolls down upon me, it has done me a world of good to find this site and see a lot of familiar (albeit old) names!!! Yes, the 70's rule! It's a pity the the late seventies and onward can't share us older versions' affinity with the school itself and all the old places nooks and crannies. This will be an exciting year for me as I will be a volunteer track coach at the old alma mater in 2001. I figure it has been years since I was a second-in-command and what better place to do it than at our old haunt with the incredible athletic facility. Hope to see many of you on Septembe 3rd at the class of 70's picnic on the lawn.

It would seem that the old Piedmonters, Hairys or otherwise, have gone the way of the dinasaurs and just plain disappeared off the face of the web. Since I check in once a week or so to see what's going on and have not seen much action for a while from the alums, it would seem that some sort of social director is needed to ensure a continuous flowing of information. I would like to nominate Ms. Margaret of Montana for the task. I would like to see some internet games and prizes ala "Emperor Nortons Treasure" if anyone remembers that from the KYA or KOBI so many years ago. Being in publishing, I would volunteer to donate a years subscription to Lapidary Journal or Vegetarian Times. And to those of you who are wondering, yes, I do need a life! I was hoping this would help some.

Britney: You should ask everyone in your public area who needs a shave to get one! There should not really be any men with beards in your audiences (unless they brought their kids, I guess, but then they should really stay in the back where you can't see them.)
By the way, for the rest of y'all, did anyone see the four students birdcalling Thursday night 6/22 on Letterman? (I don't think it was a repeat.) It was pretty good, and Letterman mentioned that it was the 35th Annual Piedmont Birdcalling Contest, but there was no mention of Waxdeck. Perhaps the school has officially purged the contest of any connection with Mr. Waxdeck. Any Hairy or other people on this list around at the creation of this contest in (I guess) 1965?

Re: the bird calling contest and Waxdeck. Was the article really about this year's contest, or the contest in general? I suppose that an article about the former might omit mention of Waxdeck, given that he's not around anymore. Still, it does seem odd. Doesn't the contest actually carry his *name*, officially?

Hi. I graduated in the Class of '65. I would like to know if the School Literary Magazine called Identity is still around. I named it. I would also like to know if the Bishops are still around? I missed the various reunions? Could someone catch me up a bit on them? I knew Mr. Waxdeck. Has anyone ever heard from French teacher, Mr. Haselden, or English teacher, Diane Courtois? Is the yearbook still called Clan-o-Log?

Still looking for Jennie Snyder Class of 1991. I last saw her a few years ago. We used to be best friends for like 5 years and lost touch. Through the grapevine I hear she married Don Rose. So her last name may be Rose now. I also heard she has a 2 year old daughter named Meagan.
Jennie has two sisters, Danielle and Holly, and one brother, Paul. I believe they all live in the Bay Area still.
Jennie is about 5'8" and last time I saw her she had shoulder length permed brown hair. Her eyes are hazel(brown and green) but she sometimes wears green contacts. 3 years ago she was working for a company called VISX in Santa Clara. She worked there for a couple of years as a receptionist. Jennie has always wanted to live in Santa Cruz so she may live there.
Please, if you are in contact with her please have her email me at amazonannie@hotmail.com or looking4jennie@hotmail.com I miss her a bunch:( She was like a sister to me.
PS I think Jennie is still friends w/ Jocelyn Noone (class of 1993). If any of you know Jocelyn please email me too:)

Springman's pharmacy was owned by my grandfather, Gus Springman. My dad, Jerry, lives nearby and plays tennis four or five times a week. He's in better shape than most people half his age. I remember my grandfather buying us ice cream at the shop next to his store in the early 1960's. Of course, he used to let us "borrow" comic books and give them back the next day. My Uncle Phil Springman still lives in the bay area.

First, why is it that quite a few of the folks I remember from high school are not included in our reunion mailings, etc. I know they graduated with us, but it's like they fell into some giant hole and disappeared! A couple of names from '64 are: Bill Pooley and Steve Hansen. Next, who the hell are these Truk people? Did they just arrive on the boat and latch on to this site? Just wondering about both.

Dear Hairy Friends,
My university friend has reviewed your Piedmont Hairy welcome page for entertainment and has reported questions to Truk that ask about my trip regarding your town. Some weeks ago before traveling to New Orleans I traveled with my friend to Piedmont to observe your town since much interest had been made. Some houses were so large like government buildings, with big gate and trees and grass. It is my feeling that US government should not allow these houses for some and small houses for all others. All should need the same. Mrs. Margaret from the beautiful Montana requests more data on Mr. kneveil. Friend has explained to Truk that the motorcycle trip by the train was a game for joke with Truk. If future time is available, Truk would very much like to go to Montana to learn fishing. Truk also understands joke from email message BigDai9. Truk thinks BigDai9 more possibly is BigDai2½ with maybe 9 for mouth only. Why do many American feel need to boast size of private anatomy. Many email friends ask me what my visit to your country was for and I explain that I am preparing to attend university in your country in one year and also for looking for American grandfather who is lost for many years. Offer of help of many American people will find help in locating grandfather. Perhaps one Hairy will know of GI grandfather who worked with tank for army in Vietnam in 1966. Home location of grandfather was San Franciso area in 1966. Thank you to my Hairy friends.

May I please apologize on behalf of the Dick(ie) from my home town of Stockton. He never fit in with his own school mates, and was widely considered "a dog turd on the lawn" when it came to personality. His only saving grace was that he could spell pretty well and his grammar was good. Yes, Lefty, Butte County is quite a place. Back in the dark ages of the middle '70s, when the only place one could find a teaching job was in the metropolis of Marysville or Yubassetty (really Yuba City but they changed the name for me when I got there,) the only place to go have any fun was to migrate north on Highway 99 to Chico. I used to visit Tom Beritzhoff who rented a mansion(ok, it was not a mansion but it was a single family home with a roof and inside plumbing)near CSU, but it only had one refrigerator that they had conveniently remodeled so that on the outside was a spigot and the inside held a nice cool keg of Coors beer. It did not look unlike Denny Pierpont's truck/van back in Piedmont where a cold cerveza was not much further away than an exterior spigot on the side of his truck. Ah, yes. It was tough at Beritzhoff's to get a glass of milk but during a 48 hour R AND R in Butte County--well it doesn't get a whole lot better than that. Then over to the Oasis for some pool and a few more cold ones. So, that is the real Butte County that we all love...none of this Butte, MT stuff. Also, for those playing trivia at home--Butte County is named after what?.....yes, the world's smallest mountain range, the Sutter Buttes.

Hello again to Piedmont school Hariynet chums. I have visited your writings from past days after auto visit to Stockton yesterday. After looking at your map and find Butte Montana, I think this is far from Piedmont. Why are you there? Thank you from margaret to inform me about American hero Evil Knevil. My friends require why your American hero must jump over train with motorbike when he can wait for train to pass before he cross path. Also we donot undeerstand Waxdecks Bird Calling Contest. Mr. slim writes very rude about Truk and Vietnam. Words you say are not true about my country or Stockton. As we had little time to put at Stockton, we did see cows in yards. Also many old car and truck. In Vietnam we place cow in yard for strong reasons. Cows make yard grow. Cows eat weeds down. Cows make fast milk to drink. Cows make dinner. Cows stay in all yard, not just front like Stockton and Texas. We next plan visit to Piedmont on Saturday to see big streets and big house.

After reading the last several posts I must assert once again that I'm truly glad I did not attend PHS. I don't think I've ever seen so many spelling and grammatical errors on a bulletin board. This does not speak well of you PHS grads. These problems seem especially chronic from those of you who graduated in 1972, 73, and 74. What happened to you people? Oh yes, this was the era of wanton self-abuse and no politcal agenda. I would hope that in the future you will endeavor to self-edit, thereby elevating not only the technical end of your missives, but perhaps raising the bar regarding content as well.............Cordially, Dick

Dear Truk, In Viet, "Ch ou fa tao yo...fe-me-ra...
ou chi youg..." Sorta breaks up in the translation, but basically says, "Stockton Sucks!"
Piedmont is however the home to many big dicks, little peters, wide streets and big houses with breathtaking views of the Bay. The food though is bland and they don't allow cows in the yard. Not too sure you would like it, though come and see for yourself.

Evil Kneivel is a hero of motorcycle stunts. His son Robbie just jumped over a moving train on a motorcycle last week. They are from Butte Montana, know to people from Butte as Butte America. If you are interested in the history of the West, the mining history of Butte is rich. Many of the stories you will read here are "tounge and cheek" my favorite being Waxdecks Bird Calling Contest. Some of the humor is hard for even us hairys to understand. Inside jokes abound. Good luck in your attempts to interpret.

Belive it or not I grew up with Big dick or as he was called when were kids Little Peter. Dick always wanted to be reconized as a member........ of,well, I should say leader of the pack. Dick used to dream of growing up and playing at any Piedmont function. and well now that he has found this sight, I'm sure he wants to play at your reunion. Quite frankly he (Dick) plays with himself regularly. I think You all should give
"THE KID" a chance. He can handle an instrument.
untill next time. Please give dick a chance.

And now after all of these years, we really know why they call him Lefty...the Gimbal nut, of course. Kim, I hope you are getting residuals from it being named after you. Even at a penny a nut, well, you could be a really rich guy. Rich enough that if you ever left your wife like Howard Stern, you could be on the "Who wants To Marry a Multi-millionaire" show. They'd be lined up several women deep to learn more about that Gimbal nut!

( the following is from CNN)....The Navy earlier recovered parts of Flight 261 that came from the stabilizer,
including the 2-foot section of the jackscrew and a piece called a GIMBAL nut, which connects the stabilizer to the jackscrew.
The part of the tail section containing the GIMBAL nut was retrieved late on
Thursday, the National Transportation Safety Board said.
The stringy metal shavings found wrapped around the jackscrew definitely
came from the nut, said NTSB Chairman Jim Hall.
"A safety board investigator examining the nut reports that the threads are
heavily damaged," Hall said. "... We do not know if the damage occurred
before the aircraft's impact with the water or was the result of that impact."
The damaged GIMBAL nut from Flight 261 was being sent to the NTSB lab in Washington for analysis, as the damaged jackscrew was earlier.

Listen folks, here in Stockton I play in a very successful funk-soul band. We do lots of oldies, and are real busy with high school reunions. I would like to submit a promo-pack to who ever is in charge of the class of '70 and the class of '80 reunions. The band is called Dickie Diamond and the Johnson Bros. (My brothers, Big Hank, Buford, and Rod comprise the rest of the band).
Maybe you've heard of us!

SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU'RE THE ONE WHO IS INSECURE...INSECURE ABOUT YOUR MANHOOD AND SEXUALITY...FACE IT, YOU AND YOUR CRONIES HAVE THE CLOSET DOOR "CRACKED" OPEN. MIGHT AS WELL COME OUT INTO THE LIGHT OF DAY AND GRAB YOUR ANKLES..I THINK YOU PEOPLE CALL THAT "ASS-UMING THE POSITION"

Look here Dickie Diamond .......
First of all it is rude to post in a CAPS as you did. It is considered yelling online.
I guess it is appropiate as you have clearly demonstrated your insecurity which probably stems from your fear so you lash out in anger and become highly critical of what you dislike in yourself.
Try relaxing and enjoying our beautiful forum here that allows us to communicate openly. Try forgiving yourself for being the jerk you are and once you are OK with yourself you can more eaisly allow yourself to be open with us or with anyone.
We forgive you for being so uptight and have high hopes for your recovery.
Until then, I'd like to leave you with the Pidemonthigh.com "Wand"
Respectfully submitted,

the days of heavy lifting in oakland have now become part of legend...is it all true? did it truly happen? could there have ever been a night when young boys became men in a way which would influence so many for so long? who could have known those long years ago that a simple yet complex tryst outside the vast ivory pillars supporting thousands of years of faith would lead eventually to something so new, yet so old?

Leftist...I am flying from San Francisco to Houston and Dallas next week, to LA the next week and Salt Lake the next so let's hold good thoughts that those puppies just cruise along like they are supposed to! I did know one guy who took an earlier flight on USAir from LAX to SFO about 15 years ago when a disgruntled employee did the wild thing in the cockpit and it took the one way ticket to the ground floor. Not fun. By the way, Jay Carlson asked me to ask you that if the pilot and the co-pilot and the flight engineer are all females on a plane to they still call it the cockpit? If not...!

That is a tough question below...it is either that they have every hair in place due to the fact that theu use Mobil Synthetic 10/40 oil on their hair or perhaps they were all suspended from their respective PHS freshman football teams for violating curfew or maybe that they all dated katie Wood or that they all wanted to date Nancy Gray but were too nervous to ask or is it that they each ate the entire menu at Hambrick's 1/4 burgers late of Grand Avenue. Otherwise I am stumped. Were they all beat up by Dean Miller? Gosh, I won't cash that million dollar check yet.

OK...are you ready for round 2 of So, You Wanna Be a Hairy Millionaire? Here goes...1) Martha Carlson, PHS, class of '72 once moved to Southern California and bought the home of a notable celebrity...can you name that celeb? 2) What PHS track coach in the late '60s moved on to become a successful coach at Yuba College in Marysville? 3) On what Piedmont street is the largest house in Piedmont 4) What is the name of the lake behind the houses on Sotelo Avenue? 5) At least 3 ex-Piedmont High quarterbacks went on to be starting major college quarterbacks...can you name the PHS alums and the colleges? OK, time is clicking along. If you need a life line you can always call Dale Porter or Gil Worth. Here are the answers, and no cheating or you will have to either serve detention with Al McLain or write out 25 of Elwood Gerrits' favorite forms. 1) Regis Philbin 2) John Orognen 3) Glen Alpine Road 4)Tyson Lake 5) Don Perkins--San Jose State; Jim Kilmartin-Oregon State; Sandy Schwab-Northwestern. Well, we hope you had fun today. If you think I can think of 5 questions per day in perpetuity you must have been snacking on too many poor boys from the Lakeside Deli!

OK...time to get out some official Piedmont trivia out--in the new game show..SO YOU WANT TO BE A PIEDMONT MILLIONAIRE! Wait a minute...you gotta be a millionaire to live in Piedmont today anyway...well, how about a Piedmont or ex-Piedmont millionaire--How about...Be a hairy millionaire! OK...here are the first questions:
1)Who was Piedmont High's head football coach from approximately 1950-1975? 2)In the city of Piedmont there are avenues and drives and roads but only one street...(not Reg Street). Can you name it? 3)What former Piedmont High student was mayor of Piedmont during the 1980s? 4) What famous business located near ake Merritt was run by ex-Piedmont mayor Art Flegal? 5)Prior to 1975, what PHS football jersey numbers had been retired? Name the numbers and the players. So, what do you think? These answers have not totally be verified but then again Regis Philbin got a few wrong answers himself. Scroll down slowly so you can't cheat like you might have in Le bethel's french class. By the way, what teacher hosted the popular 1960s PHS game show called Quiz Bowl? I believe it was Doc Benson. Now, the answers and yes these are the final answers--1)Coach Bob Muenter 2)Latham Street 3)Steve Eigenberg 4)Art Flegal's Hurricane Car Wash 5)55,44,22...for Bob Jones, George Williamson, and Doug Duncan (note that George did wear #33 one of those years he was lighting up the scoreboard nd who was it named for--the scoreboard at Witter Field). The answer to that is the Charles Williams Memorial Scoreboard. Anyway, good luck to all of you.
